Chapter 22

When the big Ford Galaxie entered Yappar St in Karumba, Sarah spotted the Landrover parked just down the street and noticed that Nat and Sarge were busy unloading it and were about halfway through the job. She had the choice of driving up and helping them and then the thought of the way she and Jess had been dumped on Jean and so she quickly turned down a side street and headed for the pier. Her two companions got out to stretch their legs and Jess bounced along the pier excitedly. Excitedly that was until Sarah pointed to the sign that indicated that salt water crocodiles were in the water. Some wag had scribbled underneath to not worry about the crocs because the white pointer sharks ate those. And underneath that someone else had written that the sharks were afraid of the supersized box jellyfish.

With Jess now walking slowly down the middle of the pier and marvelling at the bravery of the people fishing right near the edge. Sarah shrugged and was thankful for her far less imaginative and far more clinical mind, but she was also well aware that the pier was well above the current tidal level and it was a long way to the water so she walked next to Jess.

After feasting on some fish and chips for a delayed lunch they all got back into the convertible and headed back to where Nat and Sarge were staying. A loud toot on the horn brought the two men out to see who had arrived and in what. Nat was the first to arrive as their three visitors piled out and he walked up to Jess and gave her a big kiss and hug. Jess immediately thought that he should go away camping more often. Sarge strode towards and then right past Sarah and gave a tearful huge hug to Jimmy. Sarah at first was a bit miffed and then realised that Sarge had believed that one of his best friends had been killed. She forgave his apparent lack of partner protocol and tact but took a mental note to use the situation to her advantage when Sarge least expected it. She too was delighted that her strong and silent partner was openly displaying affection, if not to her at least to someone. She discreetly gave a cough and then Sarge suddenly realised the error of his ways and gave her a peck on the cheek which earned him yet another mental note in Sarah’s brain. Perhaps when he least expected it wasn’t going to be too far away.

Jimmy achieved celebrity status with the second telling of his story for the day. Everyone commented on his bravery and quick thinking but all were thinking how incredibly lucky he had been to survive the blast especially when Sarge explained what he had seen as his jet had flown over it that afternoon. In deference to Jimmy’s possible sense of guilt no-one made mention at all about the lovely home that had gone up in ruins.
